Profile: Francis Selorm

 

Francis Selorm Seshie Cross Culture International (CCI) and the shop, Kente Design, are proprietorships of Francis Selorm Seshie, a designer from Accra, Ghana. Francis has been in the fashion business for 20 years. In 1992 he established his office in Denmark, producing ready-to-wear African dresses. His primary aim in establishing the business, is to promote African culture and to uplift the image of Africa in the West.

Francis Selorm Seshie near his workshop in Nørrebro, CopenhagenFrancis Selorm Seshie has now introduced in the world of fashion, the original and exotic African fabric and design, blending it with the European and Asian style. The designs of his fabric, are patterned after Ghana's oldest weaving method and are manufactured by a textile factory in Jutland, Denmark. He has introduced the Kente design in Denmark, with the Ghanian background, that suits the modern standart of dressing.

At present, CCI has done more than 14 fashion shows in Denmark. Among the major ones are namely:

IMAGES OF AFRICA FASHION SHOW (1993). Sponsored by Danich goverment, was held Søpavillonen, Copenhagen. The show was a combination of fashion and theater, and had inspired the company to change the standart of designs from ethnic to modern.

Fashion showETHNIC FASHION SHOW (1994). Sponsored by Dansk Flygtningehjælp (Danish Refugee Aid). Danish Foreign Ministry, DANIDA and the Culture Ministry. Was held in Falconer Center, Copenhagen. The show was to work together with different nationalities in showing to the puplic their culture and fashion.

IMAGES OF AFRICA FESTIVAL (1996). In cooperation with KulturBy 96 Copenhagen. Was held in Copenhagen. The show was to present the different kinds of culture and fashion, and to show the public, that all nations can come together in the world of fashion, and to impart to the public the real image of fashion.

SPEJLTELTET FÆLLEDPARKEN (1996). Sponsored by Copenhagen's Municipality. Held from June 14 - July 27, 1996. It was a cultural festival of the Africans and Latin Americans, wherein Francis Selorm Seshie, had a modeshow to visualize the African culture and Kente designed clothes.

Fashion showIMAGES OF AFRICA FESTIVAL (1996). Aalborg Kunst Museum.

EXPONENT '97 (1997). Sponsored by Design Foundation. Was held in Herning Kongres Center, Denmark.

PANAFEST '97 (1997). An international festival held in Accra, Ghana last Aug. 29-Sept. 7 1997, And participated by all African contries and descendants. The aim of the festival, was to unite the African family for development. Here CCI exhibited produced a fashion show, entiled The Kente revolution and slavery.

BRÆNDSTOF '97 (1997). An international festival, wich featured international, professional and well known artists, wich was held in Albertslund, Denmark last October 25-26 1997, CCI participated throug a modeshow, presending the Kente design and showing the cultural Aspect of Africans.

IMAGES OF THE WORLD: THE KENTE AND GOLD 2000 at "DGI byen" in Copenhagen August 27th 2000. A unique and exotic combination of theatre and fashion of Ghanian and African designing. Francis Selorm KETUS once again on his Kente Revolution "Kente and Gold" aimed at making the history and cultural values of Ghana and the rest of Africa known through their famous products and arts.

A millenium kente fashion show. The rich colourful images of African textiles, was paraded through exhibition of fashion show held in the heart of Copenhagen.

Designs / Products

Keta Ethnic Design : Initially, the company promoted the Keta ethnic design, wich was the Ghanaian waxprint and made in Amsterdam, Holland, but due to the promotion of Kente design, the production of Keta design was discontinued.

Kente Design : The Kente design for centuries, has been used for clothing in the West Africa, and was originally woven in cotton. Kente has been a well known and popular product in USA, United Kingdom and other parts of the world. At present, the Kente product lines are T-shirts and leggings, made of single jersey, with prints in Kente patterns. In the future, the Kente will be produced and weaved in new designs/patterns in sweat shirts, cardigans, pants, shirts, dresses, blouses, skirts, ties,ect.
For the first time in the world of fashion, Francis Selorm Seshie is manufacturing the Kente design, printed in single jersey and silk materials, wich designs are his own unique and original creation. He is adapting the Kente technique on new materials. The new design is called Gye Nyame, wich means in English "Except God" and the design can also easily meet the modern standard of fashion.
